Why Does My Dental Implant Feel Sensitive?

A man with a toothache

If you’ve ever experienced a sharp, shooting pain that takes you by surprise when you bite into something cold, hot, or acidic, you are likely familiar with tooth sensitivity. But while occasional discomfort is somewhat common with real teeth, if you notice this type of problem with your dental implants you may feel alarmed. That’s because they’re prosthetic, so they’re not capable of feeling anything whatsoever. In fact, if you’re experiencing sensation from them, it could be a sign of a bigger problem. Here’s why you could have sensitivity in your dental implants, and what you should do to stop it.

Causes of Dental Implant Sensitivity

If your dental implants are feeling sensitive, this could be a sign of implant failure, or it could be several other issues, including:

  • Gum infection: this can occur if you do not brush and floss well and can lead to dental implant failure if not treated promptly.
  • Impaction: food or debris can sometimes get stuck between your dental implant and natural teeth.
  • Crowding: If your implant is installed too close to your other teeth it can cause pressure on the real teeth that makes it seem as though the implant is the one that’s sensitive.
  • Tissue or nerve damage: This can occur during the implant process and while it usually heals, it is still possible that it may be permanent.
  • Allergic reaction: Though this is very uncommon, some patients can be allergic to the titanium implant post or even the cement used to secure the crown to your implant. Your dentist may be able to reduce this sensitivity by removing any excess cement.

What You Should Do if You Experience Dental Implant Sensitivity

If you notice any feelings of sensitivity or discomfort in your dental implants or surrounding areas, speak to your dentist as soon as possible. Warning signs of implant failure could include:

  • Inflamed, tender gums
  • Receding gums
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Obvious pain or discomfort
  • Swollen gums
  • Loose implant

While there is no guarantee that a failing implant can be saved, there are some procedures your dentist may be able to perform to help ensure that you can have it reattached after you’ve healed. These could include a bone graft procedure, gum disease treatment, or another treatment.

Remember, if you are experiencing dental implant sensitivity, don’t wait to be seen by your dentist. The sooner you get help, the better the odds of saving your implant will be.
